Job Title:

Human Identity Analyst

Summary of Job:

To undertake DNA analysis of samples submitted to the laboratory

Reporting Relationship:

Reports to Team Leaders

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Able to perform DNA extraction/PCR/3100 analysis or the interpretation of Forensic and paternity genotype results; following Standard Operating Procedures under the supervision of the Team Leader, ensuring that quality, accuracy and safety standards are maintained.
  • Ability to train other analysts in selected procedures.
  • Work to and maintain clean room standards.
  • Update sample tracking systems and process documentation to allow accurate monitoring and rapid progression of casework.
  • Maintain supplies of consumable reagents.
  • Interface with other team members and other teams.
  • On occasions it may be necessary to attend court and give evidence regarding samples that have been analysed.

Job Requirements:

Education:
  • B.Sc. Degree or similar level qualification in Biology or a related discipline.
Experience:
  • 1-2 years experience in a laboratory environment, handling DNA samples.
  • Working to GLP standards.
Technical Skills:
  • Knowledge of computers.
  • Experience in DNA.
  • Solid background in biology and/or genetics.
  • Ability to demonstrate good lab practice.
Non-Technical Skills:
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Attention to detail and concern for impact is essential.
  • Assists other departments as necessary.
  • Professional demeanor.

 

Physical Demands:

  • Must wear Personal Protective Equipment as required by site specific Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Sedentary walking and standing
  • Handling — seizing, holding, grasping and fingering of objects, tools and controls
  • Reaching
  • Vision — close vision
  • This role requires good concentration, meticulous attention to detail, skilled sample processing and accurate record keeping.

 

Working Conditions:

  • Clean, modern air conditioned laboratories and a computer workstation in a shared office.
  • Normal hours (7.5 hours per day) within the range 07.00 –19.00 however some flexibility may be required to deal with urgent casework demands.
